Masonry Waterproofing

Did you know that every year water, not fire, takes the biggest toll on your chimney?  Water damages masonry the most through what is called the freeze/thaw cycle.  In the colder parts of the year, water is absorbed into cracks and even the surface of the masonry that makes up your chimney.  When the temperature falls below freezing, that water freezes and expands, pushing against the brick.  This can cause cracks to grow and even cause the faces of brick to chip or pop off (this is called spalling.)

We offer two different products for your exterior masonry waterproofing needs.  Chimney Saver, which is a spray on product, is generally used on masonry that is in good to fair condition, and is an excellent preventative maintenance option.  The second product is Crack Magik, which is a brush on product.  Crack Magik is thick and can seal cracks in masonry up to 1/8".  Wider cracks can be filled with silicone before the product is applied. Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete. Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film which traps water vapors. If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage. Neither of our products will allow water to penetrate from the outside, but will allow masonry to breathe and to wick water to the outside of the chimney.
